Our Passion

Bloom-ED is a national peak advocacy body committed to ensuring evidence-based Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) is offered to all young people in their homes, schools and and communities. Successful RSE has many positive outcomes that result in healthier hearts, minds, bodies and people.

We are a collective of teachers, researchers, sexologists, students, parents and activists who operate as an alliance - in conjunction with other organisations - to advocate for comprehensive RSE.

At the current time our focus is on improving RSE delivery in Australia, but watch this space...

Internationally, and throughout Australia, evidence clearly demonstrates the benefits of RSE that is contemporary, comprehensive and engaging. Some of this evidence can be found here. We are passionate about RSE that is delivered in a positive, engaging and contemporary way. We are not interested in education that simply lectures to young people and focuses on fear.

Bloom-ED believes that to improve RSE in Australia, we need to focus our efforts on the following:

  • support families and adults to feel comfortable and better equipped to speak to young people about relationships and their emerging sexuality,

  • ensure minimum standards regarding RSE in schools so that all students across the country receive a consistent education and that school practices align with best-practice principles,

  • make certain that every teacher training organisation ensures their student teachers have a basic understanding of RSE and that more detailed support is offered to classroom teachers of RSE,

  • improve access to regular and ongoing RSE professional development opportunities for qualified teachers,

  • increase funding and attention for particular sub-populations and communities so that RSE can be delivered in a way that is contextually appropriate.

A more comprehensive approach to RSE in Australia will align us with countries such as Canada, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

We pay our respects to Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today. We commit to listening to and learning from Aboriginal people about their cultures, traditions, and knowledge, including their knowledge about relationships and sexuality. We commit to working towards a future where Aboriginal people are able to live free from discrimination, violence, and inequality, and where their cultures, languages, and knowledge are respected and celebrated.
